The first test for the minimum temperature of cranking the crankshaft with the starter, for us it is -25°C. The second test is for the maximum temperature at which the oil pump can pump oil during a cold start. It should be 10 degrees lower than the first, that is -35°C.

With a high-temperature or summer value, for us it is 40, everything is much simpler, and in order not to go deeper, we’ll just write it. The value equals the permissible temperature at which the oil will be effective.

Based on the above, if the oil is labeled 5W-40, it is safe to start the engine down to -25°C. Down to -35°C, the engine can still be started, but with increased wear and tear on its components. Well, in the summer, at temperatures above 40°C, there will also be increased wear, since the oil will become too liquid. But manufacturers can improve these parameters, since these are the minimum acceptable parameters.

How is it different from competitors

Motor fluid Lukoil Lux Synthetic 5W-40 has a number of advantages compared to semi-synthetic and mineral oils, as well as analogues of other brands:

  1. The oil complies with SAE 40 standard.
  2. Viscosity at 100°C = 13.6 cSt – the average statistical indicators for light-engine magpies (13.5-14.5 cSt), which gives some margin when fuel gets in (there is a higher probability that the oil will not go to SAE 30 even if there is 3% gasoline in the crankcase).

  6. Sulfate ash = 0.96 – normal, not high ash; when burned, the oil leaves behind few ash abrasive deposits.
  7. Pour point -40°C is good for 5W-40. Lux can be easily used in the European part of Russia and in Siberia. Provided that these are temperatures down to -30°C. Although even down to -33°C it can be run quite safely. Lukoil has always made frost-resistant oils, they never had problems with this.
  8. Flash point = 235°C – normal, nothing special. Adequate for hydrocracking, but no more. It is clear that the flash is average, that this is hydrocracking, but the rest will be shown by use. This is individual for each motor.
