PP-90M1

— A 9-mm special submachine gun designed to create a high density of fire and conduct prolonged close combat. Despite the similarity of designations with the PP-90 submachine gun, the sample in question is an original development and is designed to compete with the PP-19 “Bison”. PP-90M1 is designed to arm law enforcement officers, army special forces and special police units and national guard troops (Rosguard)

Description[ | ]

PP-90M1 is designed according to the classical layout scheme. Its peculiarity is the design of the cartridge feeding mechanism when firing, allowing the use of both conventional sector magazines with a capacity of 32 rounds, and auger magazines holding 64 rounds. Automation mechanisms work by using the recoil energy of a free shutter. The trigger mechanism allows for single and automatic fire. The firing mode translator also serves as a fuse; it is located on the left side of the receiver above the trigger guard. Instead of the usual cocking handle, there is a push button located above the muzzle of the barrel.

The receiver with handle and trigger guard are made as one piece of high-strength plastic. The housings of the auger magazines are also made of plastic. In the design of the PCB, parts stamped from sheet steel are also widely used. To increase stability when shooting, a metal shoulder rest is provided that folds forward and upward.

The auger magazine used by the submachine gun provides an extremely high density of fire during short-term fire contacts, but its cost is very high. Therefore, it is possible to use cheaper box magazines with a standard adapter that acts as a handguard.

Technical characteristics of FN P90

In order not to be unfounded, let's compare the FN P90 with its ideological analogue in the ranks of the Russian (and not only) armed forces - the AKS-74U assault rifle:

When discussing the comparison results, it is worth keeping in mind that the “opponents” have practically no common features, from the layout or caliber to the design of sights or ergonomics.

The history of the creation of the FN P90 submachine gun

Such types of weapons did not fade into the background after World War II. And if previously automatic weapons chambered for a pistol cartridge were almost the main argument in the hands of the infantryman (MP-40, PPSh and no less well-known analogs from other countries), now they have found a “second wind” in the hands of crews of various equipment, signalmen, and pilots.

By 1987, the Belgians from Fabrique Nacional presented new developments: the FN P90, the Five-Seven pistol and a 5.7*28 mm cartridge developed specifically for them. The main thing that was required from the Belgian prototypes was compactness in size, light weight and superiority in destructive power over existing 9*19 mm caliber SMGs. Looking ahead, I will say that the competitors coped with these tasks perfectly.

Modifications and operation

Despite the fact that the PP was originally planned as a self-defense weapon for those soldiers whose occupation simply did not need bulky machine guns, the P90 quickly gained respect among police and special forces around the world. It can be seen in the hands of law enforcement officers or army special forces from its native Belgium and NATO countries to exotic South America and Southeast Asia.

At the end of the 1990s, a modification called the P90 TR (later renamed Tactical) saw the light of day. This model differs from the original by the presence of Picatinny rails on the sides and one on top, instead of the standard red dot sight.

In 2005, a semi-automatic carbine for civilian purchase called the PS90 entered the market. This model lacks the possibility of automatic fire and the magazine is reduced (10 or 30 rounds), and the barrel length is increased in comparison with the original.

In conclusion, I would like to add that thanks to its futuristic appearance, the P90 is a frequent guest on film sets in its original form or “made up” to look like a weapon of the future. Also, our readers who are fond of computer games have probably met him on the fields of virtual battles.

Description of design

For greater compactness while maintaining combat qualities, the P90 is made according to the “bullpup” design. In very simple terms, its design implies a minimum of free space, some key elements are located in the butt, and instead of the usual magazine for automatic weapons under the forearm, this submachine gun is equipped with a two-row “pencil case” placed in the upper part.

Also noteworthy is the modular assembly, thanks to which the P90 can easily be disassembled into three main groups:

  • barrel and sight;
  • bolt group;
  • assembly of moving parts.

This approach greatly simplifies the maintenance and repair of the PCB.

Ammunition for weapons

The 5.7*28 mm cartridge was created literally “from scratch” and is unique in the world of weapons. Despite the similarity with small-caliber rifle cartridges that are used by sports shooters and hunters, such a bullet has decent armor-piercing and lethality. Relatively recently, NATO experts conducted research in which they found out the superiority of Belgian ammunition over competing German 4.6*30 mm. Superior effectiveness against lightly armored targets, unpretentiousness to temperature changes and a more “gentle” attitude towards the barrel of a weapon were noted.

Excerpt characterizing PP-90

- Shhh! – the count hissed and turned to Semyon. – Have you seen Natalya Ilyinichna? – he asked Semyon. - Where is she? “He and Pyotr Ilyich got up in the weeds from the Zharovs,” answered Semyon, smiling. - They are also ladies, but they have a great desire. - Are you surprised, Semyon, how she drives... huh? - said the count, if only the man was in time! - How not to be surprised? Boldly, deftly. -Where is Nikolasha? Is it above the Lyadovsky top? – the count kept asking in a whisper. - That's right, sir. They already know where to stand. They know how to drive so subtly that sometimes Danila and I are amazed,” said Semyon, knowing how to please the master. - It drives well, huh? And what about the horse, huh? - Paint a picture! Just the other day, a fox was snatched from the Zavarzinsky weeds. They began to jump over, out of delight, passion - the horse is a thousand rubles, but the rider has no price. Look for such a fine fellow! “Search...,” the count repeated, apparently regretting that Semyon’s speech ended so soon. - Search? - he said, turning away the flaps of his fur coat and taking out a snuff box. “The other day, as Mikhail Sidorich came out from mass in full regalia...” Semyon did not finish, hearing the rut clearly heard in the quiet air with the howling of no more than two or three hounds. He bowed his head, listened and silently threatened the master. “They’ve attacked the brood...” he whispered, and they led him straight to Lyadovskaya. The count, having forgotten to wipe the smile from his face, looked ahead along the lintel into the distance and, without sniffing, held the snuffbox in his hand. Following the barking of the dogs, a voice was heard from the wolf, sent into Danila’s bass horn; the pack joined the first three dogs and the voices of the hounds could be heard roaring loudly, with that special howl that served as a sign of the rutting of the wolf. Those arriving no longer squawked, but hooted, and from behind all the voices came Danila’s voice, sometimes bassy, sometimes piercingly thin. Danila’s voice seemed to fill the entire forest, came out from behind the forest and sounded far into the field. After listening in silence for a few seconds, the count and his stirrup became convinced that the hounds had split into two flocks: one large one, roaring especially hotly, began to move away, the other part of the flock rushed along the forest past the count, and in the presence of this flock Danila’s hooting could be heard. Both of these ruts merged, shimmered, but both moved away. Semyon sighed and bent down to straighten the bundle in which the young male was entangled; The count also sighed and, noticing the snuff-box in his hand, opened it and took out a pinch. "Back!" Semyon shouted at the dog, who stepped out beyond the edge. The Count shuddered and dropped his snuffbox. Nastasya Ivanovna got down and began to lift her. The Count and Semyon looked at him. Suddenly, as often happens, the sound of the rut instantly came closer, as if, right there in front of them, there were the barking mouths of dogs and the hooting of Danila. The count looked around and to the right he saw Mitka, who was looking at the count with rolling eyes and, raising his hat, pointed him forward, to the other side. - Take care! - he shouted in such a voice that it was clear that this word had been painfully asking him to come out for a long time. And he galloped, releasing the dogs, towards the count. The Count and Semyon jumped out of the edge of the forest and to their left they saw a wolf, which, softly waddling, quietly jumped up to their left to the very edge at which they were standing. The evil dogs squealed and, breaking away from the pack, rushed towards the wolf past the legs of the horses. The wolf stopped running, awkwardly, like a sick toad, turned his big forehead to the dogs, and also softly waddling, jumped once, twice and, shaking a log (tail), disappeared into the edge of the forest. At that same moment, from the opposite edge of the forest, with a roar similar to crying, one, another, a third hound jumped out in confusion, and the whole pack rushed across the field, through the very place where the wolf had crawled (ran) through. Following the hounds, the hazel bushes parted and Danila’s brown horse, blackened with sweat, appeared. On her long back, in a lump, lolling forward, sat Danila, without a hat, with gray, tousled hair over a red, sweaty face. “Whoop, whoop!” he shouted. When he saw the count, lightning flashed in his eyes. “F...” he shouted, threatening the count with his raised arapnik. -About...the wolf!...hunters! - And as if not deigning to deign the embarrassed, frightened count with further conversation, he, with all the anger he had prepared for the count, hit the sunken wet sides of the brown gelding and rushed after the hounds. The Count, as if punished, stood looking around and trying with a smile to make Semyon regret his situation. But Semyon was no longer there: he, taking a detour through the bushes, jumped the wolf from the abatis. Greyhounds also jumped over the beast from both sides. But the wolf walked through the bushes and not a single hunter intercepted him.

Types of ammunition

Ammunition for a machine gun coaxial with a tank gun

Apart from classification by caliber, machine guns do not have a clear division by type of ammunition. Various modifications can use either common cartridges with each other or separate ones, depending on the purpose.

There are three main types of bullets:

  • intermediate cartridge - used for light and pistol machine guns;
  • rifle cartridge - the main ammunition used against infantry;
  • machine gun cartridges are specially manufactured for large calibers, have greater destructive power compared to rifle cartridges, and are used to destroy light armored vehicles.

A key aspect of modern infantry machine guns has been to bring them into line with automatic small arms. This applies primarily to light and single machine guns used by infantry units. Common intermediate and rifle cartridges facilitate the supply of such units.

For heavy machine guns, large-caliber armor-piercing ammunition is predominantly used. The emphasis is on destroying armored targets. However, light machine guns with a rifle cartridge are also used for support against enemy personnel.

Combat use

During World War II, the Sudayev submachine gun was used by Soviet troops. In addition to arming regular units, partisan detachments and foreign allied formations on the territory of the USSR were supplied with submachine guns.

Captured machine guns were used by the Finns, especially the scouts.

The People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia received its first PPS in 1944.

In the post-war years, the submachine gun was used in the DPRK: at least until 1997, locally produced weapons and the USSR remained in service.

PPP in the post-war years

In Poland, the design served until the 80s, after which the PPS remained as a weapon for security and police services.

In Ukraine, the Sudaev system entered service with the civil service in the early 90s, which made it possible to maintain combat effectiveness in the conditions of the impossibility of rearmament with the 5.45 cartridge. There is evidence of the use of PPP in the early stages of the conflict in the south-east of the country.

Advantages and disadvantages

First, let's talk about the positive aspects that the Belgian submachine gun can boast of:

  • The main advantage is innovative ergonomics with very compact dimensions and low weight. The PP is easy to learn for right-handers and left-handers (used cartridges are ejected from below so as not to hit the shooter’s face, regardless of which shoulder the shooting is fired from);
  • Outperforms analogue models of “pistol” calibers (9*19 mm, .45) in terms of accuracy and shooting accuracy, while having relatively low recoil;
  • The P90 combines a high rate of fire with a large magazine capacity. For the convenience of the shooter, the magazines are made of transparent plastic, so the fighter always knows how many cartridges are left in the magazine;
  • At short distances the bullet has excellent armor-piercing properties.
