Where is the VAZ 2114 solenoid relay located?
The starter device on the VAZ 2114 model is not much different from other cars of this brand. The fairly simple design of the motor starter allows it to serve for a long time without breakdowns. Jamming and complete failure of the retractor relay makes normal use of the starter impossible. To replace it yourself, you need to know the location of the relay. The photo below shows the exact location of the retractor element.
The photo shows the assembled device. At the top of the picture there is a cylinder to which the power wire goes. This part is the solenoid relay. With some manipulations, dismantling the part takes about 10 minutes. Quick replacement of the VAZ 2114 starter relay is possible due to the convenient location of the element. If desired, you can completely dismantle the part and start replacing the spare part.
Video that clearly demonstrates the replacement process:
The main task of the solenoid relay is to close the circuit in a timely manner. When you turn the key in the ignition switch, the core located in the relay housing is activated. Next, this core drives the bendix, which leads to the operation of the rotor. The gears together with the bendix drive the flywheel. As soon as the engine starts, the driver turns the key to the initial position and the circuit opens.

Lada 2114 ❄❄❄Snow Queen❄❄❄ › Logbook › #35 Replacing the starter retractor relay
Hello. One fine day ( February 23
), after driving around the city to go shopping, he was on his way home. I decided to stop by the store near my house. I stopped, turned off the car, and went to the store. I sit down and try to start the engine, but nothing happens... instead of the sound of the starter rotating, there is a click, Second, third attempt... tenth... nothing changes, click and that's it. The starter died. In the end, I started it from the pushrod and drove it home. It was necessary to find out what exactly happened to the starter, and to do this we had to remove it from the car. To remove the starter you must:
Disconnect the positive terminal from the battery. And then we remove the air filter, unscrew the 2 bolts securing the filter brackets, loosening the clamp of the rubber pipe, and disconnecting the mass air flow sensor (mass air flow sensor) connector. Next, unscrew the engine protection
We only unscrew it from the front where it is attached to the crabs, if the repair is carried out without a pit or lift, and lower it down, then unscrew the engine mudguard.
There are only 7 screws, unscrew them and remove the engine splash guard.
Next, unscrew the positive wire from the retractor and remove the positive chip
Then you can unscrew the starter mounting nuts, upper and lower
And now the starter is unscrewed, we take it home.
To diagnose a breakdown, we need 12 volt power; we can use a battery or a transformer. We connect the negative terminal to the starter housing. and the positive terminal to the contact of the solenoid relay. When connected, a click is heard and the starter bendix pops out, therefore this contact is working. When the terminal is connected to the lower contact of the solenoid relay, the electric motor turns on, therefore the electric motor itself is safe and sound. Next, we connect the terminal to the upper contact of the solenoid relay and with the same terminal we close the contact of the solenoid relay, a click occurs and the bendix jumps out and the electric motor starts working, in my case this did not happen. This means that the solenoid relay has died.
To remove the solenoid relay, unscrew the 2 relay mounting bolts, as well as the lower contact, and disconnect the electric motor contact. We take out the relay.
Signs of malfunction of the VAZ 2114 retractor relay
The difference between a breakdown of the solenoid relay is that it does not happen unnoticed. Even a faulty element can perform its function for some time. The difficulty of starting the engine if the device is worn out will depend on the number of attempts to turn on the starter.
In frosty weather, this problem will become more pressing, because... Poor VR operation will quickly drain the battery. Before carrying out work to replace a part, you need to make sure that the breakdown is accurately diagnosed. To do this, you need to know the signs of a malfunction in the VAZ 2114 VR:
- When the key is turned to the position of supplying power to the starter, a characteristic buzzing sound is observed, indicating that the starter is not engaging with the flywheel;
- There are clicks from the starter device, but it does not turn on;
- When the engine is running, the unit continues to operate and does not turn off even when the key is turned to the initial position.
It is recommended to replace the VAZ 2114 starter solenoid relay if one of the problems occurs. Sticking the starter in the on position accelerates its wear. Where the unit's bendix is located, there should be maximum engagement with the flywheel, so slipping is unacceptable. The design of the starting device is made taking into account a short period of continuous operation, so sticking when turned on wears it out.

VAZ 2114 starter relay – let’s take a closer look at the device!
Often, many VAZ 2114 owners are faced with a situation where the car does not start or starts very poorly. There can be many reasons for this behavior of a car, but the first thing everyone looks for is a problem with the starter. One of the main problems in its operation is the relay.
Causes and effects - why won't the car start?
The reluctance of a car to start is often due to a discharged battery. The problem is especially relevant in the winter, when the outside temperature is below zero. The lack of energy to start can be determined by the sound - if you hear a sharp, unpleasant noise of the starter trying to crank and start the engine, then it’s time to recharge. In this case, it is necessary to partially or fully charge the battery, but if time is pressing, you can “light it” from another car.
It is also worth checking if there is an open circuit in the ignition contact group. Partial disconnection of the contacts occurs when the key is turned in the ignition mechanism of the VAZ 2114, in this case the starter will not even try to turn over. To fix this breakdown, you need to remove the plastic from the steering column and reconnect the ignition contacts. In some cases, it is necessary to tighten these terminals with pliers.
The lack of contact mass on the starter of the VAZ 2114 is also a common problem for this series of cars. Due to the slightly unsuccessful design of the engine frame, the starter is very poorly protected from direct contact with water and therefore rust forms on its contacts. If you encounter this problem, you need to re-clean the contact wire and screw it onto the starter solenoid relay. Before carrying out this procedure, you need to remove the terminals from the battery.
Starter repair - how to fix it?
The VAZ 2114 starter itself may also fail. In this case, it will need to be completely replaced or thoroughly repaired. First, disconnect the starter relay from the control unit. It is located inside the cabin, on the left side of the steering column. In the photo or marking diagram you will find which fuses need to be turned off. If possible, you can replace them.
The starter solenoid relay is a device whose operating principle is to transfer current from the battery to the starter. This happens under the influence of an electromagnetic valve. You can see what this part looks like in the photo. It is the solenoid relay that prevents the starter winding from burning out. If it were not there, then a constant current would flow from the battery. The solenoid relay on VAZ 2114 models is located on top of the starter; two wires are connected to it, from the ignition and the battery.
These contacts must be well protected from external factors. It is advisable to rewind them with insulating tape, this will protect them from short circuits.
To replace the starter retractor relay, you need a small set of tools, namely several 10 and 8 keys, a flat-head screwdriver and the device itself. The starter relay in the VAZ 2114 is located in such a way that to replace it you do not need to completely remove the entire starter. The starter should be removed only if it is necessary to conduct a full inspection and identify other causes of failure.
Necessary tool
Without tools, dismantling and installing a new part cannot be accomplished. The procedure for removing the solenoid relay or starter assembly requires a simple set of wrenches. The following tools will be useful for trouble-free work:
- Socket wrench and open-end wrench 13.
- Phillips and flat head screwdrivers.
- Key for 10.
- New retractor.
A simple set with all types of keys will be useful to any driver, because... No one is immune from sudden breakdowns of VAZ cars. The advantage of the 2114 model is that repairing most components is cheap, and even a novice driver can change the retractor on a VAZ 2114.
Briefly about the device and principle of operation
The starter itself is a power electric motor operating from constant voltage. Additionally equipped with a retractor relay, an overrunning clutch and a bendix (a gear with which the starter directly engages with the flywheel).
When the starter is turned on using the ignition switch, voltage is supplied to the solenoid relay (the relay, by its operating principle, is an electromagnet). An electromagnetic field is generated due to the coil built into the relay. Under the influence of which the connecting fork moves the bendix along the rotor shaft of the electric motor and engages it with the flywheel. At this time, the armature enters the relay, closing the contacts, which turns on the electric motor itself. Which starts to rotate the flywheel through the bendix.
After starting the engine, the rotation speed of the flywheel is several times higher than the rotation speed of the bendix. It turns out that it is not the starter that turns the flywheel, but vice versa. To prevent damage to the electric motor, the overrunning clutch is activated. The gear begins to spin together with the flywheel in a “free” motion, without turning the starter shaft. This continues until the power supply through the ignition switch is stopped.
Replacing the solenoid relay on a VAZ 2114
If there is a problem with normal engine starting, you should repair the starter device. First of all, prepare the tool and work area. For normal dismantling, you can free up space under the hood by removing the air filter housing. Next, the replacement process can be described in several steps:
- Remove the terminals from the battery for safe operation.
- Disconnect the power plugs.
- Using a 13mm wrench, unscrew the terminal screwed to the starter housing.
- Unscrew the fastenings of the main body of the unit (3 nuts by 13).
- Remove the unit from the seat and use a size 13 wrench to unscrew the wire from the cover.
- Unscrew the screws securing the solenoid relay with a screwdriver and remove the part.
It is recommended to install only a new one in place of the old device. Even if there is a slight malfunction of the device in the core, the housing assembly should be replaced. It is clear that this approach may not be suitable for some, but the cost of this device is not so high that you can try to restore its operation using improvised means.

Starter relay on VAZ 2114: self-diagnosis of failure
Connection diagram It is not difficult to determine from the photo where the starter switch is located on the fourteenth VAZ model. This element is located directly on the starter and has two wires:
- The first is red and thin, a small current from the ignition switch passes through it;
- The second thick positive one comes from the battery.
How it works
The device works as follows:
- The battery supplies power to the starter coil;
- The coil acts on the armature due to the influence of the magnetic floor;
- The armature moves and compresses the return spring;
- This causes the bendix to mate with the splines located on the flywheel;
- When the contact elements close, the pull-in winding is deprived of power, and the armature is held inside the system due to the magnetic field;
- After closing the contacts and starting the engine, power stops going to the holder coil, and the armature returns to its place due to the action of the spring. As a result, the bendix disengages.
Malfunctions and their symptoms
Troubleshooting
But it is not at all necessary to disassemble the assembly in order to recognize the signs of a faulty solenoid relay. They look like this:
- The engine runs, but the starter still turns. At the same time, the sound is too loud and uncharacteristic;
- When the ignition is turned on, the starter does not spin, although the relay makes a characteristic click;
- The ignition is turned on, but the starter is idling and the engine does not respond.
All this suggests that there is a high probability of your transmission on the VAZ 2114 breaking. Therefore, it must be removed and a new element installed in place of the damaged one.
Dismantling and replacement
To make it more convenient to replace the relay, it is recommended not to be lazy and still remove the starter itself. This will allow you to simultaneously check the condition of the starter while replacing the relay.
The removal procedure described below concerns an assembled relay, which has the ability to replace individual structural elements.
- Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
- Disconnect the red terminal from the relay. This is a red wire.
- Using an 8 mm wrench, unscrew the nut securing the brush assembly. You will find it behind the relay.
- Remove the contact that this nut held in place.
- Unscrew the fastening of the solenoid relay to ground. We are talking about coupling bolts.
- Next, you need to dismantle the power wire, after which the relay itself is pulled out.
- The fastening nuts are unscrewed from the end part, which allows you to remove the upper part of the relay.
- It is advisable to immediately replace the relay core with a new one.
- Install a new relay.
- Proceeding strictly in reverse order, reassemble the assembly, which will allow you to complete the replacement of the unit.
- When separating the relay into its two component parts, be sure to ensure that the core does not slip out and the spring does not jump out.
We can say that replacing the gearbox on a VAZ 2114 is not so difficult. It is much easier to replace a non-separable relay, since to replace it it is enough to unscrew all the fasteners in the same way and disconnect the contacts.
Checking work
Sometimes, despite more than obvious signs of breakage or wear of the retractor, in reality everything turns out to be wrong. The car may behave similarly with some other malfunctions.
Therefore, in order to figure out whether the relay works or not, and also who is the real culprit for the violation of the functionality of the system, we will conduct several checks.
- Check the starter. Turn the ignition key. The starter should begin to turn, and the relay should make a characteristic click. If the starter is not doing its job, replace it. Relyukha has nothing to do with it in this case.
- Check the solenoid relay. To do this, there are two copper bolts on the back cover. Two contacts are attached to them. If the starter starts turning, then your relay has definitely failed and needs to be replaced. In this case, you should not remove the starter, which will allow you to get more accurate test results.
- If you have removed the starter, the check is performed slightly differently : Connect the contact wire of the retractor relay to the positive terminal of the battery;
- The second contact connects the starter ground and the battery charger;
- When the contacts are placed on the relay terminals, the relay should turn on with a characteristic click;
- If the operation is too slow, uncharacteristic, check the condition of the contacts. They often burn out or oxidize.
Differences between starter and relay failure
In order not to confuse what exactly has failed - the starter or the solenoid relay, there is an excellent method for recognizing the “culprit”.
- Remove the starter, connect the negative terminal of the battery to ground;
- The design of the device has copper bolts and a tongue-shaped element;
- The positive wire from the battery is connected to this “tongue”;
- If there is contact, the solenoid relay clicks and starts working;
- If not, then you will have to go to the store for a new relay.
But there is one more very important point. Even if all the facts indicate that the starter or retractor relay is not working, another unit - the ignition switch - may still be the cause of ignition problems. Take the time to check its serviceability before buying new parts.
