For Russia, this engine has become attractive and interesting because it is officially installed on new models of the Lada X-Ray car at the AvtoVAZ plant. The base unit has a power of 114 hp. Previously, the device was mounted on such foreign cars as Renault and Nissan. And today it can be found on many car models from sedans to urban crossovers.

When developing the unit, engineers decided to increase the emphasis on the efficiency of the internal combustion engine. A device was introduced that allows the valve timing to be changed automatically. The intake shaft has changed its inclination while rotating.

Such innovations more than 10 years ago, since their release in 2006, have created a technical sensation, placing emphasis on high quality and economical fuel consumption in cars of this class, such as sedans and crossovers.

Emphasis was also placed on reducing the overall weight of the power unit. In this case, the developers replaced the alloy in the cylinder blocks with aluminum. Reducing the total weight of the power plant made it possible to significantly increase the service life of the suspension on the vehicle.

Maintenance HR16DE

Maintenance of the HR16DE engine is carried out in accordance with the regulations:

  • replacing engine oil and spark plugs - every 15 thousand km (under severe operating conditions - every 7.5 thousand km);
  • change the lubricant in the box - manual (every 90,000), automatic (every 60,000);
  • replacing the timing chain, antifreeze in the cooling system - after 90 thousand;
  • changing the air filter, cabin filter and brake fluid - every 30 thousand;
  • installation of a new fuel filter - every 45,000;
  • oil in the transfer case and gearbox - every 60 thousand;
  • valve adjustment every 80 thousand km.

Common Problems

When operating a car such as a Nissan Beetle or Lada Vesta, a knocking noise may appear after a short period of use when it is cold. This may be due to the timing belt stretching. In order to check this fact, you need to make sure that the timing marks are in place. Weak compression can also be the reason why knocking occurs. The engine also has the following weak points:

  • Untimely replacement of spark plugs forms carbon deposits on the contacts;
  • The oil filter may cause an oil leak;
  • Failure of the right engine mount.

In the last point, if the engine starts to shake strongly, this is a consequence of a breakdown. You just need to change the pillow and the knocking will go away. Another common problem during long-term use is the operation of the motor. At medium and low speeds it may suddenly stall. This type of problem can be solved by ordering a new relay for the ignition unit. For service you will need:

  • Change oil and spark plugs in a timely manner;
  • The valves must be adjusted manually;
  • If the alternator belt becomes loose in tension, it must be replaced immediately.

Such actions will avoid more serious damage to the engine system. According to the maintenance map, all these actions are carried out according to plans. If knocking or whistling noises are noticed, you should immediately contact the diagnostics department.

Not all vehicle models face these types of problems. But as practice shows, such problems can arise during prolonged use in unfavorable conditions.

Disadvantages and weaknesses of HR16DE

The main problems of HR16DE (and solutions to them) are as follows:

  • whistling of a weakly tensioned generator belt - tighten or replace;
  • sudden stop - replacing the ignition unit relay (Nissan was recalling a car with such a fault);
  • a burnt ring of the muffler exhaust pipe causes an uncharacteristic loud sound when accelerating - replace the part;
  • The right support, which has exhausted its resource, causes vibrations - a new cushion must be installed.

Difficulties in starting the HR16DE in cold weather (from -15 degrees) can be considered a minus and a feature. Installing new spark plugs or trying to start with gas in some cases helps solve the problem.

The weak point can be called the continuously variable transmission (CVT), which often exhibits shocks, does not like sudden starts and braking, and slipping.

With good maintenance, many problems with the HR16 engine can be delayed until the mileage is high.

Features of maintenance and repair

Nissan Tiida engines have always been considered reliable and unpretentious; there is no doubt at all about the service life declared by the manufacturer at 250 thousand kilometers, and after passing this milestone, the car will travel the same amount, even more, but this is subject to timely maintenance of the engine. The gas distribution mechanism has a chain drive, which for the first time will require replacement at 150-180 thousand kilometers.

Signs by which you can determine the need for circuit maintenance may be the following:

  • the engine troits and is unstable at idle;
  • when starting a cold engine, a rustling sound is heard from the end side (where the cooling radiator is);
  • An engine error may come on; diagnostics are needed to show a malfunction in the gas distribution system.

What other malfunctions occur with the HR16DE engine, where the owner himself is not able to fix the breakdown. There are times when the engine starts to misfire, and in this situation it is impossible to do without diagnostics, but the result will immediately help determine the cause, for example, if at least one ignition coil burns out, then the diagnostics will show which coil burned out, and you can look for the fault at random. a very dubious procedure.

The car is equipped with an electronic throttle valve and a system for variable valve timing; there are no problems with this equipment, but adjustment of the valve clearances is required every 70-80 thousand kilometers, due to the fact that there are no hydraulic compensators.

A common problem is the stretching of the bypass belt of the generator and air conditioning compressor; here it is necessary to immediately replace it when a whistle is detected; note that this malfunction is in no way related to engine malfunctions.

Another problem with the engine was the flooding of the spark plug wells. This leads to the fact that the ignition coil begins to pierce the housing, and accordingly disables it. You should look at the coils at least once every 15 thousand kilometers and pay attention to them when replacing spark plugs.

It is better to install iridium spark plugs; they last quite a long time, up to 40 thousand kilometers. The volume of engine oil is 4.3 liters, the engine does not consume oil until 200 thousand mileage, after which the average oil consumption can become from 0.4-1 liters per 10,000 km, this is not considered a large indicator.

Advantages and benefits

The advantages of the HR16DE engine include:

  • undemanding use of gasoline (drivers often fill up with 92 instead of the recommended 95);
  • excellent performance at low speeds;
  • reliability with proper attitude to maintenance;
  • long service life with proper operation - in practice, more than 250 thousand without major repairs.

Plus – the availability of a contract engine on the secondary market. The price of the power plant depends on the age and degree of wear (from 25 to 45 thousand rubles).

Description of the HR16 DE 1.6 liter engine

The 1.6-liter HR-series unit was first introduced at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. The design was quite common for the Japanese engine industry of those years: an aluminum block with cast iron liners and an open cooling jacket, an aluminum 16-valve head, a timing chain drive, an inlet phase regulator and solid pushers instead of hydraulic compensators.

The fuel injection here is distributed, but not quite ordinary, with two injectors per cylinder, and thanks to the use of an electronic throttle unit, the engine was able to fit into Euro 5.

Tuning

The most popular way to improve the performance of the HR16DE engine is to do sports firmware. Chip tuning gives a small increase - about 5%. More significant tuning (up to 125 horses) involves firmware and installation:

  • direct-flow exhaust;
  • two-inch pipes;
  • spider type exhaust manifold (4-2-1);
  • cold air intake systems.

The 160-horsepower configuration involves the installation of a VW K03 turbine with an air cooler (intercooler) and air pipes (piping). Careful tuning pays off, but if you overdo it, it will require repairs.

Installing a more powerful turbine will require intervention in the engine design, thanks to which you can achieve a power of 200 or more horses.

Design features of the HR16DE internal combustion engine

The joint engine of the Renault-Nissan HR16DE / H4M alliance engineers received important design improvements:

  1. Instead of a belt on the timing drive, we installed a reliable chain with a long service life, up to 200,000 kilometers. The oil pump is also driven by a chain.
  2. The cylinder block was made from aluminum alloy to improve dynamics. Cast iron liners were installed here, which significantly increased the durability of the engine.
  3. Fuel injection, point, atomized. It is performed by two injectors in each cylinder.
  4. The fuel mixture distribution scheme is DOHC. There are two camshafts inside the cylinder head. One is for the intake valves, the other is for the exhaust valves.
  5. The BC head has a height of 125 millimeters, the permissible maximum misalignment is 0.1 mm.
  6. Phase adjustment occurs due to a fluid coupling installed on the input shaft. The oil pressure in which is controlled by a solenoid valve. The EC, in turn, receives commands from the vehicle's ECU.
  7. The throttle valve is controlled in the same way by the vehicle's electronic control unit.

Comfort above all: advantages of the Nissan Tiida chassis

The elastic suspension of the Tiida easily absorbs bumps, helps to clearly track the trajectory in turns, but does not encourage aggressive driving due to the slight rolliness of the car.
And this is good, since a not very powerful engine in combination with such a suspension means that the car was not driven “to the tail and the mane.” Everything is done simply: the McPherson is in front and the torsion beam is in the back, so there’s not much to break here. With a mileage of about 80 thousand km, the time will come to replace the support bearings, wheel bearings and silent blocks of the levers, which are replaced only as an assembly with the levers. The work will cost approximately 1,500, 1,500 and 1,500 respectively - Nissan has always been distinguished by its enviable consistency. But how much to pay for parts depends on the owner’s economy; the price range sometimes differs by half. To replace the stabilizer bushings you will only need a few hundred rubles.
