Bosch spark plugs selection by car

Meaning of the marking on the spark plug

The letter and number designation on the spark plug helps you immediately find out all the technical characteristics of this element. Many owners think that this designation is similar to GOST, but this is not so. The markings of foreign candles and Russian ones differ in a different order of letters and numbers. Also, on foreign candles, alphabetic codes predominate, which are included in special tables.

Mandatory designations on Russian spark plugs:

  • Date of manufacture of the candle. Not only the year is indicated, but also the month. In candles with the addition of precious metals, the day of manufacture is indicated.
  • The name of the company that produces these candles. In some cases, a company name may be replaced by a trademark.
  • Designation of candle type. Usually it is placed conditionally, in the form of one or several letters.
  • Standard stamp: “Made in Russia”. On more modern candles you can see the short “RUS”.

Marking spark plugs makes it possible not to choose a fake, which appear in sufficient quantities on the modern market. Also, all the values that are printed on the packaging will allow you to select analogues for cars produced in the last century. Even special interchangeability tables have been created that show which foreign spark plug can replace a spark plug from a Russian manufacturer. A similar procedure can be carried out in reverse order.

How to choose the right type of spark plugs

To buy the right type of spark plugs, you need to be guided solely by the recommendations of the car or engine manufacturer. The technical documentation usually indicates not only the characteristics of the candles, but also accredited manufacturers. As practice has shown, experiments with the selection of non-standard spark plugs (not recommended by the instructions) at best end in the absence of positive changes in engine operation. Let's consider several popular options among motorists in terms of choosing spark plugs.

Inexpensive and high-quality nickel spark plugs NGK 2460 have proven themselves to be good for Korean cars. At a price of about 140 rubles apiece, they cover the regulated mileage without any problems and rarely fail under increased loads on the internal combustion engine (bad fuel, oil burn, etc.) .

A17DVRM spark plugs are popular among owners of domestic cars. Simple, cheap and unpretentious, these candles, even in the event of premature failure, can be easily replaced with new ones, because the price of one usually does not exceed 70 rubles.

For those who want to light spark plugs once and forget about this consumable for 120–150 thousand kilometers, platinum BOSCH FR 7DPX are well suited. These spark plugs are installed on domestic VAZs and some foreign car models. At the same time, the price of one candle is not exorbitant and is within 250 rubles per piece.

If access to spark plugs in your car is difficult, then it would be a good solution to install iridium spark plugs. After all, the replacement work can significantly exceed the cost of the parts themselves. Moreover, in this case, it is better to install not just iridium spark plugs, but from a brand that has been proven for decades. For example, Denso IKH16TT iridium spark plugs will allow you to forget about the need to replace this consumable for at least 150 thousand km. However, the price of one good iridium spark plug fluctuates around 600 rubles.

NGK spark plug markings

NGK spark plugs are a quality product that has not received negative reviews over its long history. The use of high quality components in the manufacture of ngk candles can significantly increase its service life. The price of such candles is above average and knowledge of the markings on the packaging is simply necessary when purchasing.

Be sure to watch the video:

Standard designation for NGK spark plugs:

  • The 1st to 4th letters indicate the thread diameter, the hex key opening and the design of the spark plug itself.
  • In the 5th position there should be a number that indicates the glow number of the candle.
  • The 6th letter shows the thread length of the spark plug.
  • The 7th letter indicates a design feature of the candle. Spark plugs can be small-sized (for tools with small gasoline engines), or with a reduced hexagon.
  • The 8th position is responsible for what gap is set between the electrode and the housing. This information is very useful if the clearance was compromised during removal. Therefore, after purchasing a candle, it is better to leave the packaging or rewrite all the designations.

To understand what exactly the letter means, you should familiarize yourself with the table of decoding typical meanings of ngk candles. Finding such a table will not be difficult, for example, on the Internet.

Brisk spark plug markings

Brisk spark plugs are quite popular all over the world and are a product of a Czech company.

Standard markings for brisk spark plugs:

  • The first letter will show what size the candle body is and what key it is for.
  • The second letter indicates design features. The Czech company producing spark plugs is guided by a number of specific standards, which are subsequently indicated on the packaging.
  • The third letter indicates the presence or absence of a resistor. Also, an additional resistance can be installed on the spark plug, which prevents the main electrode from burning out. This resistance is designated accordingly.
  • A number that is the glow number of the candle.
  • In the last place is a letter that determines the name of the material from which the main electrode is made. To quickly understand the material, you should know that the last letter is the first letter of the name of the element, but only in Latin.

An interesting fact is that when marking brisk candles, the Czechs do not use the number 13, simply skipping such a designation.

Bosch spark plug markings

Today, Bosch is a guarantor of famous German quality and high reliability. The high quality of Bosch spark plugs is proportional to the cost.

The marking is very similar to Brisk candles, differing only in a different arrangement of letters and numbers.

  • The first letter indicates the thread size.
  • The second shows the presence of a resistor or resistor.
  • The third number shows the glow number of the candle.
  • The penultimate letter indicates the thread length.
  • The last letter indicates the material from which the main electrode is made.

Since Bosch is a very well-known company, a certificate is included with any of its products. By checking the certificate with all the letters and numbers, you can easily identify a fake.

What do the marked parts mean: information analysis

The above parameters are not the only important data. Another sign is geometricity - it will be characterized by a set of numbers and letters placed in front of the heat number:

  1. Of primary importance is the diameter, which shows the thread and pitch (for Russian “T” it is a 10 mm diameter, the letter “A” is a diameter of 14 mm, and for “M” the figure is 18 mm.
  2. Then information begins about what was used in the manufacture of the insulator. The data is disclosed as follows:
  • “B” - boroncurundum;
  • “K” – corundum crystal;
  • "X" - syntoxal;
  • "U" - uralite.
  1. Material for making sealant.
  2. The letter “E” is an indicator of corrosion protection (not on all models).
  3. Some have markings on the location of the insulator.
  4. Some domestically produced samples have designations that show what material the electrode is made of.

What do the marked parts mean? Table-diagram

Incomprehensible data has a deep inner meaning. Of course, it is impossible to remember by heart which letter means what. There are special reference books for this (although it will not be difficult to memorize the notation for the first point).

The last point is also relevant - for example, a copper electrode will guarantee much better heat transfer than other sources. Very often the side electrode is made from this material (the part will heat up less).

Of course, in foreign models no one will use the Cyrillic alphabet for marking - the letters here will be Latin. They are usually used to mark what the electrodes are made of (for example, S (silver), C (copper), P (platinum)). Precious materials that are used to spray the part (or even the base for the electrodes themselves) are a guarantee that the service will last much longer than other samples.

Marking of imported spark plugs: what is the difference from Russian ones

Obviously, the difference in the automotive industry of different countries was also reflected in the designation of information. The following classification has been adopted in Russia:

  • hot spark plugs - heat number marking from 11 to 40;
  • cold spark plugs - markings are from 20 and above;
  • average (from 17 to 19);
  • unified (from 11 to 20).

If we take imported samples as a basis, the “cold-hot” marking is not used here. Manufacturers of foreign car brands indicate the heat number in a completely different way:

  1. For many of them, it indicates the time (moreover, seconds) that will be needed for the electrodes to be able to warm up to the temperature of unauthorized ignition. Such data is measured by reference engines specially created for this purpose with specially set pressure parameters and other available indicators.
  2. The letters and numbers of imported copies do not at all coincide with those on domestic ones. To facilitate such a translation, there is a special table. According to her testimony, it is possible to interchange devices, but it is not recommended - it is still better to use the originals.

Beru spark plug markings

The Beru company is a German manufacturer of spare parts for automobiles. Analogues of such candles also exist on the Russian market.

Explanation of the symbols on the packaging of Beru spark plugs:

  • The first two numbers indicate the diameter of the spark plug thread.
  • After the thread diameter, the third designation is the presence of a resistor.
  • The fourth position means the heat number (usually placed after the dash).
  • The penultimate position will show the thread length. This letter may indicate the presence of an O-ring.
  • The last position shows what material the electrode is made of.

Beru spark plugs are a product from a high-class manufacturer. Before purchasing, you must carefully check not only the letter designation on the package, but also the appearance of the candle. Scuffs, scratches on the body, or a bent electrode indicate that this product is a fake or defective.

Basic Concepts

Threaded part SZ
Depending on the type of engine and make of the car, it is determined what the size and thread of the spark plug should be to ensure normal operating conditions for the car engine. Dimensional and connection parameters of these products are considered to be:

  • relative to the thread, these are the diameter and pitch;
  • dimensions of the threaded connection and screwed part;
  • turnkey hexagon parameters.

Installing spark plugs that do not meet the engine characteristics can lead to the following unpleasant consequences:

  1. If the diameter and pitch of the threaded connection are incorrectly selected, the SZ simply will not screw in.
  2. If the length of the screwed-in part is too short, the SZ will not allow the spark plug contacts to be positioned correctly inside the combustion chamber. This will cause unstable operation of the power unit. Continued use of products that are too short will clog the free space of the hole for installing the candle; subsequently, installing a candle with normal dimensions will be difficult.
  3. An excessively long SZ becomes an obstacle when moving the piston or valves - this can lead to serious damage to the car engine. Plus, the part of the NW that protrudes into the combustion chamber will be covered with soot. When unscrewing it, there is a high probability of damaging the socket for installing the SZ.

To bring the cooling jacket closer to the spark plug, factories that manufacture SZ increase the length of the threaded connection, while they are forced to:

  • use very high quality raw materials to manufacture your products;
  • make the spark plug diameter and turnkey hex parameters smaller;
  • use a conical platform for support.

Increasing the size of the spark plug thread using a conical support surface makes it possible to bring the cooling jacket as close as possible to the NW. The length of the thermal cone of the insulator allows you to change the heat number SZ. An increase in this parameter helps to reduce the heat value. At the same time, the ability of the SZ to self-clean from carbon formation increases, since the blowing of the thermal cone of the insulator becomes better. Plus, electric current leakage is reduced due to better isolation of the central contact from ground.

The selection of SZ is carried out taking into account the recommendations set out in the manual for the car. In the absence of such documentation, you need to select spark plugs according to the catalogs of SZ manufacturers, taking into account:

  • make, year of manufacture of the car;
  • brand and type of car engine.

It will not be possible to select products suitable for a particular motor based on other parameters: there is no unified SZ labeling system.

We recommend watching a video about selecting SZ:

Champion spark plug markings

The marking of spark plugs from this manufacturer is not much different from the products of previous companies.

  • The first letter will indicate the presence of a resistor. The letter O means that a wirewound resistor is installed in the spark plug, and E indicates that a screen is mounted.
  • The second letter indicates the length of the thread and the design of its execution.
  • The thread designation is followed by the heat number.
  • The next three letters indicate the type of spark plug design, the presence of additional electrodes, and the material from which they are made.
  • The last position of Champion spark plugs indicates the gap between the electrode and the body.
